Hot Dog Toppings That are Better Than Ketchup

Entertaining

Think hot dogs are just for kids? These fancy hot dog toppings will make you think again!

Hosting a Hot Dog Bar is a fun and easy way to feed family and friends.  EASY is the keyword –  because let’s be real, those lazy days of summer can hit hard.  Plus, hot dogs are easy to have on hand for those impromptu hang-outs or busy days at the cottage.

To make a good hot dog, start off with a quality wiener from your local butcher.  If you can recognize the ingredients, even better! Some options you can find at Heatherlea include: Stemmler’s Jumbo Beef Franks, VG Meats No Nitrite Wiener, and Alderwood Farms.  If you are looking for a chicken option, try this one.

As for the bun, we went for a locally made brioche bun to soak in all those flavours.  This one by Fred’s Bread is made in Toronto, On.

Now for the toppings, you can get as fun and crazy as you want.  Offer up a good variety of sweet (sauces, relishes), spicy (mustards, hot sauce), savoury (cheese, onions), and sour (pickles, sauerkraut). Be sure to include something crunchy – it’s a nice contrast to the soft bun.  Lettuce or slaw would do the trick!

You can lay out the toppings and let your guests get creative or offer up some themed hot dog ideas like we have here.

We hope you feel inspired for your next Hot Dog Bar cook-out!
